Rumour Has It that Adele Won Big

So I start the week with a confession: I hate Adele. Well, perhaps hate is too strong a word. But her music is definitely not my cup of tea. I actually really like singer-songwriters -- Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine is fantastic -- but Adele for some reason doesn't do it for me. I find her lyrics to be less than inspired and her over-stylized lounge singer sound to be a bit over the top.

But she did win big last night, and deservedly so. While I personally don't enjoy her music, I get why people like her, and that's why I play her so much. I also appreciate that she has restored the place of the female singer-songwriter in pop culture. Having grown up in the 90s with artists like Natalie Merchant, Lisa Loeb, and Sarah McLachlan, I've been saddened by the dearth of such musicians over the last decade.

So congratulations, Adele. And I'll just turn my headphones down when we play her music. What do you all think?

  1. You could be me. I mostly listen to all kinds of rock (classic, surf, college, etc.), but I also grew up with '90s female singer-songwriters. I, too, dislike Adele's music. I have nothing against the torch song (even though I don't particularly like the genre either), it's actually her voice I dislike. I can't listen to her songs because her voice gives me a headache for some reason. And I also prefer Florence Welch's voice over Adele's. I agree with everything you said about her bringing back the singer-songwriter tradition, but I wish there was something in-between Adele's faux-authenticity and the blatant fakeness on the other end.

To make this even more odd, I've been listening to Natalie Merchant and Fiona Apple a lot these past few months because there simply aren't any new female musicians I like.
